HOUSTON -- DeAndre Hopkins holdout has yet to change the perspective of Texans general manager Rick Smith, who says the club has made a firm decision not to negotiate with the wide receiver this season.Hopkins, who is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, did not report to the start of Houstons training camp on Sunday. Hopkins is subject to fines of $40,000 for each day of camp he misses, and Smith confirmed that Hopkins is being fined for his absence. His actions are counterintuitive to any of the productive energy that is necessary for anything to get done, Smith said following the teams first training camp practice on Sunday morning. There are any number of factors that go into when or whether or not to extend a contract, Smith added. [Hopkins representatives] came to us this summer and talked to us about that. We contemplated and came to a decision and we communicated that decision to them, and told them it was a firm decision.Smith said the team was surprised by Hopkins choice to hold out.I didnt expect him to hold out, Smith said. It was a bit of a surprise. Hes made his point, and hopefully hell be back in camp soon. Hes under contract, so there isnt anything to get done other than him coming here.Hopkins was a first-round pick by Houston in 2013. The Texans extended their first-round picks in 2011 and 2012, J.J. Watt and Whitney Mercilus, as they entered their fourth seasons. We decided that this was not the right time for a number of reasons, Smith said of the teams decision not to give Hopkins an extension this year.Because the Texans picked up the fifth-year option on Hopkins contract in May, he has two seasons remaining on his deal. Hopkins also has a $445,000 roster bonus due on the fifth day of camp that he will miss out on if he hasnt returned.Smith said Sunday that the team remains in communication with Hopkins and is hopeful of his return. Were in constant communication, Smith said of his current relationship with Hopkins. I never negotiate in the media, and were not in a negotiation, and our conversations Ill keep between us. But its positive dialogue, and like I said, hes expressed himself. Weve been clear with him with respect to our position as well, and hopefully hell be in pretty soon.New starting quarterback Brock Osweiler said Sunday that he also continues to talk with Hopkins, his expected top receiver. Hopkins had 111 catches, 1,521 yards and 11 touchdowns during the 2015 season while working with four different quarterbacks in Houston.DeAndre and I are definitely having communication among each other, Osweiler said. First of all, hes a great friend and a great teammate. Im going to be there to support him, but he has to handle his business with the team, and I need to focus on the guys that are here and ready to work. But certainly I support DeAndre, and whatever he has to do. And thats his business, between him and the team.Watt, who is currently on Houstons physically unable to perform list as he recovers from recent back surgery, said he understands Hopkins position.Im a player, so I advocate for players getting paid, Watt said on Sunday. If I was in the front office, Im sure my answer would be different. But Im a player, and I know that a career is short. And if he feels this is what he needs to do, then this is what he needs to do.Second-year receiver Jaelen Strong, rookie Will Fuller and veteran slot receiver Cecil Shorts received the majority of repetitions on Sunday with Osweiler and the first-team offense. We respect DeAndre and his abilities and his contributions to our football team, and his future contributions to our football team, Smith said. But hes not here. Were here, were working, and our football team had a good day today. Thats where our focus is. Cheap Nike Shoes Online . CINCINNATI -- Jonathan Lucroy slipped on his shirt, turned around and looked seriously at waiting reporters.Lets get this over with, Milwaukees All-Star catcher said.Lucroy knew hed be asked about his passed ball that allowed Billy Hamilton to dash home with two outs in the ninth inning Sunday, giving the Cincinnati Reds a 1-0 win over the Brewers. The speedy Hamilton drew a two-out walk from Tyler Thornburgh (3-3). Left-hander Will Smith relieved and walked Joey Votto.Hamilton stole third with Jay Bruce hitting, setting up the game-winning play. The curveball glanced off Lucroys glove as Bruce swung and missed and rolled away to the left. The ball didnt even get to the dirt track near the visitors dugout, still far enough away for Hamilton to easily score. It was originally scored as a wild pitch, then changed to a passed ball. The pitchers deserve better, Lucroy said. (Milwaukee starter Zach) Davies deserved better. That cant happen. Thats minor league stuff right there. I shouldve caught it. If its in the air and I get a glove on it, Ive got to catch it.Smith considered the curve particularly tough to handle.I just kind of yanked it away, Smith said. You know Lucroy is an unbelievable catcher. It happens. Thats what speed does. It makes you freak out.Manager Craig Counsell admitted that the Brewers were conceding third base to Hamilton.More bad things can happen trying to throw him out than letting him steal third, Counsell said.Tony Cingrani (2-2) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.Davies and Cincinnati starter Dan Straily each pitched seven impressive innings.Straily, who was 1-4 over his last five starts, gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four. He set down nine straight batters in one stretch and didnt allow a runner to reach second base until the sixth, when Jonathan Villar led off with a walk and stole his major league-leading 33rd base.Villar went to third on catcher Tucker Barnharts throwing error, but Lucroy grounded out to end the threat.Davies, recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs before the game, allowed four hits with no walks and five strikeouts..dddddddddddd. Four of his strikeouts were called and he coaxed four comebacks, only one hit sharply.Thats a really good example of knowing when Im locating and mixing it up, he said. I know its going right when theyre taking pitches and not getting good swings on balls. The Reds got two hits on his first three pitches, putting runners at first and third, but Davies escaped.Milwaukee put runners at first and second with two outs in the eighth against Michael Lorenzen, but Ryan Braun grounded out.NOT SO FASTReds rookie Jose Peraza was caught stealing second by Lucroy with one out in the second inning. Peraza was 13-for-13 in his brief career going into the game, including 10-for-10 this season.CONSISTENT STREAKERVillar went 0 for 3 to see his hitting streak snapped at seven games, his fourth streak of that length this season. Seven games is his season high.POWER OUTAGEReds pitching was able to keep Braun in the ballpark for the entire three-game series, a rare luxury. The Milwaukee left field went into the series with 32 homers against Cincinnati, more than against any other team, and 19 at Great American Ball Park, more than at any other location.TRAINERS ROOMBrewers: OF Hernan Perez didnt play, but Counsell said he was available off the bench a day after leaving with a sore left foot, the result of a foul tip.Reds: RHP Caleb Cotham, whos been on the disabled list since May 31 with right shoulder inflammation, reported no problems after throwing 13 pitches, nine for strikes, in one inning of a rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola on Saturday.UP NEXTBrewers: After a day off on Monday, Milwaukee plays the first of 16 second-half games against the Pirates.
